Old Boys nerve on a knife-edge

Shepherd Neame Essex League Division Two – South Woodford v Old Southendian & Southchurch

South Woodford 117 (32.0 overs)

Old Southendian & Southchurch 97 (33.5 overs)

South Woodford won the toss and elected to bat

South Woodford won by 20 runs

OLD SOUTHENDIAN & SOUTHCHURCH remain tantalisingly close to promotion, despite suffering a batting calamity and ultimately a third-successive Shepherd Neame Essex League Division Two defeat.

Bottom of the table South Woodford defied the odds to take maximum points. However, all appeared well for the Seasiders when they dismissed the home side for just 117 with Ahmed Khwaja taking 6/37 and former Essex man, Andy McGarry providing the perfect foil with 4/21.

Muhammad Arish top-scored for South Woodford, hitting 34 off 28 balls before falling to Khwaja. But his knock proved decisive as the Old Boys chase faltered badly.

Talisman, Khwaja did his utmost to rally his side, reaching 39 before he was trapped lbw by Vivan Hassen. Meanwhile, Garry Neicho and Krishan Vadher both used the ball superbly, each taking three wickets to ensure a dramatic victory for the east Londoners and a nervy finale to the campaign for the Old Boys.

Old Southendian & Southchurch remain top, ahead of Horndon On The Hill by virtue of a better run rate. They take on Wickford at Garon Park next Saturday, September 7 (12:30pm) needing two points to secure promotion.

Points: South Woodford 25 Old Southendian & Southchurch 4
