Old Boys set for title decider

Kelvedon Hatch v Old Southendian – Essex Olympian League Premier Division – Kelvedon Hatch Village Hall – Report

Kelvedon Hatch 0-4 Old Southendian

Old Southendian set the bar high ahead of a pivotal week in the Essex Olympian League Premier Division title race which sees them face second-placed Rayleigh Town and Sugate, currently third, in what should prove to be a mouthwatering finale to the campaign.

Despite the Old Boys enjoying a single-point advantage at the summit, Rayleigh remains favourites, with three games in hand over the Garon Park-based outfit.

“All we can do is ask questions of them,” Old Boys boss, Altan Ali told Yellow Sport.

“Of course, if we can beat them on Wednesday evening, that will plant a seed of doubt. It’s in their hands, but we must make it as difficult as possible for them.”

Nevertheless, Rayleigh kept in touch with a comfortable 3-0 victory at Bishop’s Stortford Swifts. Meanwhile, the Old Boys hit for without reply at Kelvedon, with Mitch Ali scoring twice, Matt Tonking and Callum Ludlaim also on target – all the goals coming after the interval.

“It was a good second-half performance from the lads,” Ali added.

“We’ve won eleven on the bounce. I can’t ask any more of the players. I know they will give me everything, as they already have this season. They should be rightly proud of themselves.”

Meanwhile, Old Southendian’s second string was on the wrong end of a 4-2 defeat at the hands of their Basildon Town counterparts in an entertaining Essex Olympian League Division Two encounter.

The result left the Old Boys a point above the dropzone heading into the final furlong of the season.
