Old Boys spot-kick heartache at Sungate

Old Southendian’s Senior League Cup run was brought to its conclusion following a mammoth penalty shootout with fellow Essex Olympian League Premier Division side, Sungate at Ilford Wanderers RFC.

The Old Boys recovered a two-goal deficit to lead 3-2 but were agonisingly pegged back in the final seconds before the spot-kick drama

Goals from Matt Tonking and Nick Henesey restored parity. And the Southend-based side looked to have snatched an unlikely victory when Tonking scored from the spot after Callum Ludlam had been felled.

But Sungate levelled the score which the games final action, then held their collective nerve to progress.

“We had a couple of injuries during the early stages and had to change our game plan accordingly, but found ourselves 2-0 down,” boss, Altan Ali told Yellow Sport.

“We showed plenty of spirit and determination to turn the tie around. It was a heartbreaking way to lose having seemingly climbed Everest.”
