Old Boys take title charge to the wire

Rayleigh Town v Old Southendian – Essex Olympian League Premier Division – Aspect Arena – Report

Rayleigh Town 0-2 Old Southendian

Old Southendian left Essex Olympian League Premier Division title favourites Rayleigh Town stunned after recording an impressive 2-0 victory at the Aspect Arena, extending their advantage at the summit to four points.

Nathan Elgie and leading marksman Mitch Ali netted the all-important goals – the latter taking his tally to the season to twenty-seven – to secure the victory and extend the Old Boys’ winning run to ten matches.

“These boys are giving a superhuman effort,” Old Boys boss, Altan Ali told Yellow Sport.

“We’ve come here, dominated the game, asked all the questions and won the game. What more could I possibly ask from the players?

“We always believe in ourselves. Tonight was no different. We were up for the challenge and have perhaps planted a seed of doubt in Rayleigh Town with our performance and the result.”

Ali added: “Of course, it is still out of our hands. We still need to keep doing our stuff while hoping Rayleigh slips again. They are a good side and will be hurting off the back of that. As I’ve said before, we can only control the controllable.”
