Old Boys title charge is dealt a blow by Sungate

Old Southendian v Sungate – Essex Olympian League Premier Division – Garon Park – Report

Old Southendian 2-2 Sungate

Old Southendian’s late Essex Olympian League Premer Division title charge received a blow as third-placed Sungate recovered a two-goal deficit to earn a share of the spoils at Garon Park.

Fresh from an impressive victory over the title favourites Rayleigh Town, the Old Boys looked set for their eleventh successive victory when goals from Mitch Ali and Callum Ludlaim gave them a 2-0 advantage.

However, James Smith reduced the arrears five minutes before the break, then Robbie Farrell restored parity sixteen minutes from time.

Frustrated Old Boys boss, Altan Ali, told Yellow Sport: “We are gutted that the game has got away from us, particularly after hearing that Rayleigh Town dropped points as well.

“The dressing room is down right now, but the boys have given it everything this season. We are done, but Rayleigh still has to win their games in hand. If they do, then fair play to them, they deserve it. But my squad have proved that they are genuine contenders.

Ali added: “Sungate have fought back today, showing why they are up there as well. We should have put the game to bed, but we haven’t and now have to reflect upon it.”

Elsewhere, Old Southendian Reserves remain just outside the Essex Olympian League Division Two dropzone despite slipping to a 6-2 defeat at the hands of Pitsea Athletic at the Basildon Sporting Village.
