Old Southendian 5-4 Letchworth
OLD SOUTHENDIAN Men’s Hockey Club’s first XI took a huge step towards promotion by toppling league leaders, Letchworth, in a nine-goal thriller in front of a bumper crowd at Warners Bridge.
The Prem ‘B’ leaders arrived in south-east Essex seven points clear at the summit. However, they were in for a shock as the Seasiders closed the gap following a pulsating encounter.
Ben Cotton profited from David Catchpole’s toil, while Alfie Hibbard and Liam Peoples were also on target as the home side raced into a 3-1 lead at the interval.
And it got better for the Old Boys after the restart with Sam Lowe and James Beardwell extending their advantage, much to the delight of the home supporters.
But Letchworth hit back to set up a grandstand finish. Speaking after the game, skipper, Hibbard, enthused: “A great game and vital three points achieved with us heading into the final month of the season. The team are playing well, and we will continue to push those teams above us.”
Old Southendian’s second string were beaten 3-0 by runaway league leaders, Old Loughtonian. Nevertheless, captain, Jack Stevenson, explained: “Today we had the lowest average age of a squad fielded in several years for the second XI.
“Despite the result, we put in a fantastic performance. It is clear from the youngsters stepping up today that the future is very exciting for the club.”
