Old Boys underway with a win
Old Southendian 2-1 Canning Town
Old Southendian got their Essex Olympian League Premier Division campaign off to a flying start with a hard-fought 2-1 success over Canning Town at Garon Park.
Old Boys were indebted to goalkeeper, Pete Loveday for a couple of fine saves during the opening period. Meanwhile, Brad Confrey went close – his goalbound header cleared off the line.
Craig Patton gave the home side the lead – drilling home from the edge of the box after the hard-working Callum Ludlaim had fashioned an opening.
Sam Adcock kept his cool to double the lead after Mitch Ali had turned provider. Old Boys had to endure a nervy final few minutes after Canning Town reduced the arrears. Nevertheless, the Southend-based side had opportunities through Matt Tonking and Ludliam to put the contest to bed.
“The boys stood tall and saw the game out for a great win and a good start to the season,” Assistant boss, Dave Tubbs told Yellow Sport.
“We had a couple of good chances to kill the game off and have things to work on but I’m very pleased with the work rate, team spirit and result.”
