Despite inconsistent recent results, Josh Ward remained upbeat and confident that his Southend Saxons side are moving in the right direction.
Speaking to Yellow Sport ahead of the Saxons trip to Old Haberdashers, Head of Rugby, Ward explained: “The league table isn’t great reading for us at the moment. There is a bit of catching up to be done. We know the magnitude that this block of games holds for us.
“Both the Saxons and Priors have been pretty honest. We want to be involved in those big games, come the end of the season. This block of four games is going to have a big say on whether we are there or thereabouts.”
On the trip to Croxdale Road, Ward added: “We’ve never had an easy ride against Old Habs. We are fully aware that despite their league position – which is irrelevant – we’ve got to keep chipping away at what we do and how we are trying to play.
“We haven’t lost back-to-back games. We beat Amersham between Sudbury and Shelford. It has been frustrating because we’ve had opportunities. We actually showed in that opening 15-20 minutes against Shelford – We blew them apart.
“Injuries happen to every side, every squad. It’s not an excuse. We are really proud of how the players have adapted. A lot of people have had to step into unfamiliar positions – that’s a credit to the boys.
“But as I said, we have to keep chipping away. We play an exciting brand of rugby and have shown at times this season, whoever the opposition, that we are difficult to deal with.”
