OLD SOUTHENDIAN have confirmed the appointment of Paul Smith in a first-team coaching role at Garon Park.

The ambitious ProKit UK Essex Olympian League Premier Division outfit firmly believe they have recruited the perfect man for the job and despite other offers to return to football following a two-year hiatus, Smith thought the Old Boys challenge was too good to turn down.

“Paul was a part of the coaching staff at Southend Manor which finished runners up in the Essex Senior League and reached the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup,” boss Connor Lane told Yellow Sport.

“Both Dave Tubbs and myself were with Manor at the time so we are fully aware of his capabilities. He is an experienced coach with a wealth of knowledge. We fully believe he can help take us to the next step.

As well as a notable spell with the Southchurch Park club, Smith also produced successful women’s teams for both Manor and Great Wakering.

Lane continued: “Although there is a great deal of uncertainty surounding football at the moment, we are ensuring the club is in the best possible position to be ready when the game returns – hopefully, sooner rather than later.”
