One step forward and two back for frustrating Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur v Southampton – Premier League – Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – Reaction

Tottenham Hotspur 2-3 Southampton

It’s been a case of one step forward, two steps back for Antonio Conte of late.

Just as the Italian appeared to be steering the good ship Tottenham Hotspur towards calmer seas, a storm of their own brewing arrives to knock them off course.

It’s as frustrating for the manager as it is the Lilywhites support. Sure, Southampton did more than enough to deserve their victory in N17, but Tottenham’s defensive frailties once again surfaced to leave fans frustrated and the manager perplexed as another chance to hone in on a top-four finish was carelessly tossed by the wayside.

“For sure, you attack with ten players and you defend with ten players,” Conte explained.

“When you concede a goal there is a kick – in the top angle, you can only clap your opponent. Otherwise, in every goal, there are situations that you can improve.

“I think it’s normal when you conceded three goals. For sure, we scored two goals and the goals we scored there are situations that Southampton can improve. I repeat, we have to work and know that our season will be tough.

Conte added: “It will be tough, we have to know this. But I repeat I am pleased with the effort and commitment of my players.

“I ask them to always have personality, good personality and then during the game you can make mistakes but we have to try to reduce mistakes and to improve in other aspects.”
