O’s looking good ahead of season opener

Leyton Orient 2-0 Gillingham

Kenny Jackett’s new charges continued their impressive pre-season form, after comfortably seeing off their League One visitors.

Having held strong West Ham and Tottenham team, the East Londoners dominated this rain-soaked early Saturday kick-off and went deservedly ahead when one of Jackett’s eight signings, Omar Beckles, crashed a high ball home, after only 13 minutes.

Both sides then traded blows, with a Gills’ Trialist testing Lawrence Vigouroux from a set-piece, before fine Dan Kemp wing play, seven minutes from the interval, saw the O’s Trialist double the lead, stretching to toe-end the former West Ham schemer’s deep cross.

Content to sit on their two-goal lead, after the turnaround, the O’s were barely troubled, with Connor Wood nearly putting through his own goal – but clearing his lines acrobatically – before Gills’ sub, Vandaine Oliver failed to make a decent connection from only eight yards out, in the closing stages.

Jackett said: “It was a good exercise this afternoon. But, pre-season is over. We’re happy with what we’ve done in terms of business. But, now the real stuff starts and we’re looking forward to it.

Jackett warned: “The quality of the opposition is very high in League Two and that will tell us where we are as we strive to have a successful season.

The former Portsmouth and Wolves boss concluded: “It’s a tight division, anybody can beat anybody and traditionally points totals have been low.
You need to get your best side out on a regular basis.”

Orient face a difficult opening day trip to fancied, Salford City, and former Crewe and Shrewsbury man, Beckles added: “I’ve only spent a year in League Two, but I know they’re a good side.

“It’ll be interesting to see how they shape up. Hopefully, we’ll match their work and see what we can do.”
