O’s ok by Kitch as table-topping County are toppled

Leyton Orient 2-1 Newport County – Reaction

Peter Kitchen doffed his cap in the direction of Ross Embleton and his Leyton Orient side after they came from behind to inflict only a third defeat of the season on impressive Sky Bet League Two leaders, Newport County.

Newport arrived in the capital four points clear and displayed their promotion credentials with a slick first-half performance which saw them take the lead through Jamie Proctor and limit the O’s to very little as an attacking force.

However, after the break, the Orient looked much more purposeful. Danny Johnson equalised just after the hour – his fourteenth goal of the campaign. And it became apparent that it was now the East Londoners with the bit between their teeth.

And the O’s gave their returning supporters something to remember when James Brophy grabbed what proved to be the winner eight minutes from time.

“This result has proved that we can compete with the top sides,” Kitchen told Yellow Sport.

“It was the perfect way to bounce back from two defeats – an excellent three points and a result which moved us back into the play-off places.

“Ross reverted to a more familiar line-up following the midweek EFL Trophy tie. It’s a line-up and system which has seen us collect our best sequence of results with Craig Clay returning to the midfield.

“It has demonstrated to the lucky 1,700 fans inside Brisbane Road the benefits of a settled team, offering more of an attacking threat and cohesion.

Kitchen added: “As I’ve suggested previously, December is a key month of fixtures with four more games before the turn of the year, against teams all currently below us.

Maximum points from these fixtures will keep the pressure on those around us in the play-off places. With that in mind, Ross might need to identify areas we need to strengthen and perhaps bring in some quality to add depth what with the transfer window looming.”
