Bowers & Pitsea v Corinthian-Casuals – Len Salmon StadiumPitching-In Isthmian League Premier Division – Report

Bowers & Pitsea 1-0 Corinthian-Casuals

By Dave Bishop

Antony Papadopoulos’ seventy-first-minute headed goal saw Bowers & Pitsea through to a crucial 1-0 victory over Corinthian-Casuals in their bottom-of-the-table clash at the Len Salmon Stadium.

The win, their second in successive games, lifts Bowers out of the relegation zone whilst defeat for Casuals, their fifth straight loss, leaves them languishing in the twenty-first spot – just one point ahead of Herne Bay in last place.

An end to end encounter with both sides looking good on the ball but despite the quality of the build-up play on display, they were unable to create any meaningful end product during the first period although Bowers were unlucky not to take the lead just ten minutes in when debutant and recent signing from League of Ireland side Waterford, Jeremie Milambo, intercepted a poor clearance out of defence to rifle a twenty-five-yard thunderbolt against the Casuals crossbar.

Bowers finished the first half strongly with Papadopoulos heading just wide of the left post from a corner and Emmanuel Oluwasemo’s long-range effort, well caught by keeper Callum Coulter on the whistle.

Oluwasemo went close just after the break when his shot was blocked by Coulter following a corner and just after the hour, Dexter Peter headed a good chance directly into the keeper’s arms following a free kick.

Bowers’ pressure paid off when Papadopoulos broke the deadlock with nineteen minutes left on the clock and with Casuals pushing forward looking for an equaliser, Harrison Carnegie found himself with a great opportunity when he went clear, only to fire wide and shortly after, Findlay Lovatt’s effort flew high over the bar from distance.

Centre-back Simbarashe Kudyiwa had a great chance to draw the scores level for Casuals in stoppage time at the end of the match, only for him to glance his header past the post following a corner.

An evenly matched game but an invaluable three points for Bowers, who will take great confidence from this victory as they head to Parkside to play Aveley on Saturday, February 4 (3pm).
