Oxford United 4-0 West Ham United – Reaction
MANUEL PELLEGRINI was left stunned and bemused after witnessing his West Ham United side crash out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Sky Bet League One outfit, Oxford United.
Pellegrini made nine changes following Sunday’s impressive Premier League success, but despite still fielding a side perfectly capable of the job in hand, second-half goals from Elliott Moore, Matty Taylor, Tariqe Fosu and Shandon Baptiste completed a 4-0 thrashing for the east Londoners.
“Nobody expected to lose this game 4-0 against a team that had a lot of merits – It is very easy to say we played bad but they played well,” the Chilean bemoaned.
“Maybe the first forty-five was more level but in the second forty-five, they were very good in attacking and defending.
“If we lost this game, first it is to the merit of Oxford – Second, it is because we did not believe they are a difficult team.
“The motivation to beat the team in the Premier League is high. They have good players. We made too many mistakes.”
When asked if his team had been complacent, Pellegrini added: “No. They wanted not to be but mentally they were not prepared to give 100 per cent what you need to give in this kind of game.
“The team, that is in League One they give it all, every ball, all they can do, but in the second half we tried to continue with the same pace but they were better with their chances.”
