A Thorpe Bay pensioner has completed a charity challenge by walking over 53 miles up and down Southend Pier.
May Hamilton, 82, kicked off the fundraiser on her 82nd birthday at the start of June, walking 40 times up and down the world’s longest pleasure pier in the hottest weather we have seen this year.
She was walking the equivalent distance between Southend Hospital, Northwick Park Hospital and St Mark’s Hospital in Harrow, as these are the three hospitals that have helped May throughout her life and she wanted to give something back to say thank you.
She celebrated completing her epic task with a well-deserved sit down and an ice-cream to help her cool down.
May, who is also a volunteer at Southend Hospital, said: “Eureka! I’ve at last finished my pier walk challenge. Thank you to all who have supported me and made this possible.”
