Police were called just before 7.30pm on Monday, February 1 following a report of an assault.
A man in his 70s was struck on the back as he walked through the underpass at Roundacre, Basildon.
The victim was taken to hospital for treatment to a stab wound. His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening or changing.
The suspect is described as a white man, 6ft, broad build and aged in his 30s. He was wearing a black bomber jacket and dark tracksuit bottoms.
Officers will be carrying out increased patrols in the area to offer reassurance to the community.
District Commander for Basildon, Chief Inspector Chris Bradford, said: “I know this will be a concerning incident for people living and working in the Roundacre area.
Anyone with information or who witnessed the assault, or who can identify the man described, is asked to contact Basildon CID on 101 quoting crime reference 42/19034/21.
