Peter Kitchen: If I don’t laugh, I might cry…

Leyton Orient v Bristol Rovers – Sky Bet League One – Brisbane Road – Reaction

Leyton Orient 0-1 Bristol Rovers

Peter Kitchen reflected upon the most ‘Leyton Orient’ of months and admitted if he didn’t laugh, he might cry.

Despite brushing aside Sky Bet League One promotion contenders Oxford United and Blackpool, damaging defeats at the hands of Burton Albion and most recently Bristol Rovers at Brisbane Road have left the East Londoners outside play-off hopes hanging by a thread.

“I guess it is what supporting Leyton Orient is all about,” Kitchen told Yellow Sport.

“The highs and lows surface in equal proportions, and Saturday was a prime example.

“We’ve had lots of the ball, seventeen corners and plenty of chances but ended up with nothing. Chris Martin’s goal for Rovers was their only shot on target. It’s frustrating, but it happens.”

Kitchen continued: “Again, I think it is important to take stock of how far we have come and where we are in the league. Richie Wellens and the players are as frustrated as we are. I don’t doubt for one minute that this group desperately want to do well. The truth is, we are not quite there yet.

“Rovers were quite robust and difficult to break down. I’d be more concerned if we hadn’t created anything, but at the same time, we need to be more ruthless in the attacking third because similarly to Burton, we have wasted a good opportunity.”

The former frontman concluded: “We have a tough game at Wigan coming up on Saturday. Nobody is giving up on the play-offs, but that sense of reality has just given us another gentle nudge and reminded us that we are Leyton Orient and should perhaps expect the unexpected.”
