Peter Kitchen: Orient can bounce back from Tuesday’s freak result

Leyton Orient v Carlisle United – Breyer Group Stadium – Sky Bet League Two – Saturday 3pm

Leyton Orient v Carlisle United – Preview:

PETER KITCHEN reflected upon a frustrating opening 45 minutes for Leyton Orient at Plymouth on Tuesday evening but fully expects the East Londoners to bounce back when they face Carlisle United at the Breyer Group Stadium on Saturday.

Orient have been in sparkling Sky Bet League Two form of late. However, they found themselves four-goals behind at the interval against the West Countrymen and despite an altogether more solid display after the break, the O’s went down 4-0 – their first defeat in six league outings.

“A new manager coming in usually has a positive impact on players – I think in this case, it can only be described as a freak result,” Kitchen told Yellow Sport.

“What Carl Fletcher witnessed was miles away from where we have been in recent weeks and indeed, where we want to be.

“Plymouth’s opener was handball – even more so than Maradona’s 1986 World Cup ‘Hand of God’ goal past Peter Shilton and England! It’s difficult to believe that it wasn’t picked up by the officials. Nevertheless, Orient never recovered and suffered a crushing defeat.”

Kitchen continued: “Perhaps this can serve as a wake-up call and quells any thoughts of complacency and overconfidence generated in recent weeks. It certainly reminds us that there is still a sizable job to do in the weeks ahead – I’m sure the manager and players all know that.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s clash against out of sorts Carlisle United, Kitchen added: “Carlisle have lost four on the bounce and are struggling towards the bottom of the table, desperate to end their dismal run.

“They will defend deeply, expecting to be put under huge pressure from Orient. Fletcher’s men mustn’t allow them to make a contest of it and impose themselves right from the start.

“An early Orient goal will settle the nerves and can serve as a tonic as we look to put Tuesday behind us. I expect to see the Orient we have become more accustomed too recently and a resounding home victory to put us back on track.”
