Crewe Alexandra v Leyton Orient – Gresty Road – Sky Bet League Two – Tuesday 7:45pm
Crewe Alexandra v Leyton Orient – Preview:
PETER KITCHEN was delighted to see Leyton Orient return to Sky Bet League Two winning ways at the weekend. And although the former frontman remained cautious, he insisted Ross Embleton’s men should head to promotion-chasing Crewe Alexandra without fear on Tuesday evening.
The O’s ended a three-month wait for a home league victory by seeing off Newport County at the Breyer Group Stadium. Meanwhile, back-to-back draws have seen Crewe slip out of the automatic promotion places.
“Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves, we are not the finished article – but we have set a standard,” Kitchen told Yellow Sport.
“Orient played on the front foot against a good Newport side and thoroughly deserved the three points. The players will have gained confidence from the results and there’s far more optimism in the stands too.
“Crewe offers a slightly different challenge because they like to get forward at every opportunity and have already passed fifty goals for the season. Defensively, we need to be solid, but if we can try to fight fire with fire, with two strikers, we should find space behind them which could offer opportunities.
“Make no mistake, Crewe will be the side under pressure. It is tight at the top and they can’t afford too many slips – particularly at home. It’s not a free hit for Orient – I don’t think any match is – but we can go there and play with a little more confidence and freedom, especially now that we have given ourselves a platform following recent performances.”
Kitchen continued: “I think we should now be aiming for a mid-table finish to the season, setting the bar a little higher along the way. Orient need to build in order to challenge for the top seven next season, but it is vitally important that we don’t lose focus on what needs to be done at present.”
