Councillors in Basildon have agreed that consultation can take place with the Basildon Civil Military Partnership on a project to create a War Memorial that will display the names of all the fallen of the borough.

Members of the Communities and Wellbeing Committee met on Wednesday March 2 to note the progress of the project and authorise officers to consult with the partnership on the draft design and next steps.

It was agreed in 2019 to design a new war memorial to be located in Basildon town centre and include the names of the fallen that appear on the current memorials across the borough and also to include the names of any other fallen from subsequent conflicts.

The memorial has been earmarked to be installed in St Martin’s Square near the Bell Tower.

Chairman of the Communities and Wellbeing Committee Councillor Terri Sargent said: “Each and every one of these individuals gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. It will be a wonderful tribute to have a central place where all their names can be included as well as those from more recent conflicts.

“I look forward to seeing this project progress further.”
