Pochettino looking for an altogether more straightforward passage

Tottenham Hotspur v Bayern Munich – Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – UEFA Champions League Group B – Tuesday 8pm

Tottenham Hotspur v Bayern Munich – Preview:

MAURICIO POCHETTINO hopes his Tottenham Hotspur side can put themselves in a stronger UEFA Champions League group stage position than they were at this time last season when they face Bundesliga giants, Bayern Munich, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Spurs lost their opening 2018/19 group matches to Inter Milan and Barcelona but staged a miraculous recovery, not only to qualify but going on to reach the final in Madrid, putting out Manchester City and Ajax in dramatic fashion en route.

“We hope to win tomorrow and be in a better position than last season,” the Argentine explained.

“That is why in football it’s important not how you start but how you finish. You need to be strong in mentality.”

Nevertheless, the Spurs chief was fully aware that his side faced a mammoth task against Germany’s most successful club.

“In the history of the Champions League, they are a club that every season, they prepare themselves to try to win the competition because the history says that,” he continued.

“They are a great club, great players and an amazing coaching staff, who we know very well. We played the Audi Cup and we shared much time together. They are a historic club that can be one of the contenders for sure to win the Champions League”

Meanwhile, Spurs defender, Jan Vertonghen, spoke about the positive changes he has seen at the North London club.

“We’ve come a long way and we shouldn’t forget that,” the Belgian said.

“Now I’m getting questions about reaching a Champions League final rather than the Europa group. We want more and we’re still very hungry.

Speaking about last seasons run to the final, Vertonghen added: “We got to the final so we want to reach there again. They are more favourites than us but we know what we can do.”

Bayern Munich arrives in the capital sitting top of their domestic league, a point clear of RB Leipzig. The Bavarian outfit expects to have both Lucas Hernández and Ivan Perišić available for selection after recovering from injury and illness respectively.
