Brian Jeeves reporting from the Estadio Metropolitano, Madrid
This weekend – one year ago and having covered Tottenham Hotspur on a dramatic run through every round – Yellow Sport were at Wanda Estadio Metropolitano, Madrid, for the UEFA Champions League final…
MAURICIO POCHETTINO reflected honestly after seeing his Tottenham Hotspur sides UEFA Champions League dreams ended by ruthless Liverpool.
A controversial early penalty from Mohamed Salah, coupled with a tide strike from Divock Origi confirmed the Reds sixth success in this particular tournament.
Nevertheless, Pochettino was clearly disappointed with the early spot-kick decision after Moussa Sissoko was harshly adjudged to have handed from Sadio Mane: “That was the circumstance we cannot manage or prepare for,” the Argentine explained.
“You can never believe you will be 1-0 down after a minute. Mentally it was very tough, it’s about learning and experience like Liverpool were in this position last year.”
The Spurs chief continued: “I feel very proud about their effort, how we fight. We were unlucky, we concede a goal on a penalty. We were fighting, and we played so well in the second half.
“I feel so proud, a little bit unlucky. To start 1-0 down from the start was tough, we changed our plans but we are very proud of these players and these fans. We can be optimistic.”
Meanwhile, triumphant Liverpool chief, Jurgen Klopp, enthused: “Did you ever see a team like this, fighting with no fuel in the tank?
“I am so happy for the boys, all these people and my family. They suffer for me, they deserve it more than anybody.”
Reds skipper, Jordan Henderson, added: “Without this manager this is impossible.
“You go through tough times in a season, but what he has done since coming in is unbelievable.”
