Police reveal identity of Westcliff fatal assault victim

Police have revealed the identity of a man who died after being found injured in Westcliff last month.

Thirty-five year-old James Avis died after being assaulted in Hainault Avenue at around 10.35pm on Saturday September 25.

Radu Ciobanu, 24, of Kings Chase, Witham was arrested shortly after the incident and has subsequently been charged with manslaughter.

He is next due to appear at Basildon Crown Court on October 26.

Detective Chief Inspector Louise Metcalfe, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are continuing to appeal for anyone with information about the incident to contact us.

“If you were in Hainault Avenue on the evening of September 25 and saw or heard anything, or have any CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage, I need you to contact my team.

“Even if you think the information you have is insignificant, it could prove really important to the investigation.”
