Kent v Essex – St Lawrence Ground, Canterbury – Two-Day Friendly Match
Kent 258 (77.1 overs)
Essex won the toss and elected to bowl
JAMIE PORTER claimed four wickets on the first day of Essex’s two-day warm-up match with Kent at Canterbury.
The 27-year-old right-arm medium-fast bowler finished with figures of 4/44 from his ten over stint following a slow start to the day. Having waited seemingly an eternity to play some cricket, a brief late-July shower, typically, had the players running for cover following the first delivery of the second over.
But with the rain swiftly passing, having claimed four precious overs from an already delayed summer, the Essex attack got to work with Porter, Aaron Beard and Matt Quinn amongst the wickets before lunch – the highlight, Varun Chopra’s superb catch at second slip off Beard to dislodge Kent skipper Daniel Bell-Drummond for 19.
Jordan Cox and Ollie Robinson got valuable time in the middle – the former passing fifty off 95 balls – Robinson following that feat shortly after facing 26 deliveries fewer. Cox departed, playing on to hand Porter his second wicket of the day – the stand, 97.
Robinson reached 103 off 144 balls – a knock which included 19 boundaries – before retiring not out. Meanwhile, Essex used eight bowlers. As well as the pick of the bunch Porter, Beard claimed 2/39 as the hosts were dismissed for 258.
