Essex won the toss and elected to bowl

Sussex lead Essex by 111 runs with eight wickets remaining

Sixteen wickets tumbled on day three at Hove as Sussex established a lead of 111 over Bob Willis Trophy South Group leaders, Essex.

Jamie Porter finished with figures of 5/60 and Simon Harmer 3/48 as Essex polished off the hosts interrupted first-inning for 194 – Philip Salt’s 57 early in the contest the standout score from a Sussex perspective.

However, the visitors’ response failed to gather momentum, before Simon Harmer and Paul Walter cobbled together 29 for the seventh wicket as Essex staged a recovery of sorts from 90/6.

George Garton provided the bulk of the damage with 5/26 – including the prize wicket of Sir Alastair Cook, trapped lbw for 20. Essex were eventually dismissed for 140.

Sussex had reached 57/2 by the close (Harry Finch 32) – Porter claimed his sixth wicket of the match – Harmer clinging on at second slip to dislodge Tom Haines. Play resumes on Tuesday at 11am.
