Essex v Surrey – Cloudfm County Ground, Chelmsford – Specsavers County Championship – Day One

Surrey 137/4 (46.3 overs)
Essex (Yet to bat)
Surrey won the toss and elected to bat

ESSEX’S Specsavers County Championship Division One title challenge was frustrated as bad light forced a late start and premature close to first-day proceedings at Chelmsford.

Only 46.3 overs were possible due to the gloomy conditions – during which, Sam Cook claimed 2/35 and Jamie Porter 2/47 leaving visitors, Surrey, floundering on 137/4.

Jamie Smith’s 34 was the pick of an otherwise unspectacular opening from the visitors. Nevertheless, skipper Ben Foakes was unbeaten on 31 at the close, accompanied by Will Jack 12*.

Play resumes on Tuesday at 10:30am
