Tottenham Hotspur v Wolverhampton Wanderers – Premier League – Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – Reaction

Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers

While Tottenham Hotspur have improved notably under Ange Postecoglou, their frustrating traits remain and were again highlighted as a well-drilled Wolverhampton Wanderers side earned all three points and a Premier League double following their 2-1 win in N17.

Joao Gomes netted either side of the interval for the West Midlanders, while Dejan Kulusevski was on target immediately after the restart for the home side.

“We didn’t start the game well, first half wasn’t great,” the Spurs boss explained.

“We controlled the game well enough, we just weren’t threatening enough, and didn’t really sort of capitalise on moments we had even with our pressing it wasn’t at the usual level, and then you’re chasing the game.

“They’re a good team on the counter-attack, they’re set up that way. Second half we had them camped in their half, and sometimes in their box, and certainly created some decent opportunities but obviously you concede a second, and then you’re chasing a game of football. And we couldn’t overcome it today.”

Postecoglou insisted that the defensive side of Tottenham’s game was not an issue, adding: “Today we conceded two or three good chances on the counter-attack, I think one of them was offside. Against Wolves that’s going to happen.

“A lot of that is just sort of game state. Like I say, if you get a foothold in the game and put them under pressure that limits the opportunities that they have the other way.

“Ultimately when you’re not successful everything looks like it’s garbage. That’s not the way I look at football, the same way I didn’t think we were super great leading into this game.

“We’re still trying to build something as I keep saying, lay some foundations. I think a lot of our defensive work this season has been outstanding to be honest considering the players we have in there, the experience they have. It has been one of our strengths and we will keep trying to improve in all areas.”
