Priceless piece the key for Hammers

Everton v West Ham United – Premier League – Goodison Park – Reaction

Everton 0-1 West Ham United

Another win – Another set-piece goal. That’s twenty-nine plundered in the Premier League since David Moyes returned to East London.

This time it was Angelo Ogbonna that profited from Jarrod Bowen’s pin-point flag-kick – The Hammers ending Everton’s perfect home record as a result.

“We spend a lot of time on it,” Moyes confessed when quizzed over their useful gambit.

“Nowadays everybody’s got a set-piece coach or someone who knows.. but obviously, we want to try and be good, we have good people who want to head the ball which makes a big difference. Craig Dawson last season was great at it so as Kurt Zouma who has a record of it.

“Angelo Ogbonna has got a couple of goals and he got his one today. Issa Diop as well, so we have one or two who can head it and then you need somebody who can deliver it and thankfully Jarrod [Bowen] got one on the money today and we got a nice goal.

West Ham started the game particularly well, enjoying plenty of the ball without finding their touch in front of goal: “I was annoyed because I thought our play warranted goals or even if it had been clear opportunities we created from it,” the Scotsman added.

“To credit Everton, they blocked a lot of shots they defended the box well when we got there and we didn’t quite show enough in the final third. It was a tough game and I thought it was always going to be.

This was the first time the East Londoners had won back-to-back at Goodison in ninety years. Moyes insisted it was another sign of their continued progress: “I want the team to challenge. I want the team to play, wherever we play, to try and get the victory.

“I think with the players we have a good team. I think we’ve been playing well, we’ve probably in the last two games including today maybe not quite done enough in the final third and I include the Brentford game in that. But today thankfully we got the win.

“It is great for West Ham because we want to do well in the league and do well in Europe as well.”
