Heavy rain led to the abandonment of Wickford’s Essex League Division Three encounter with Old Southendian & Southchurch at the Patmore Memorial Sports Ground.

Having been put into bat, the home side reached 96 for two before the players were sent scurrying back to the pavilion.

Haiden Ali hit 25 before he was bowled by TJ Bailey. Meanwhile, Paul Corps was on 18 when he suffered the same fate and the hands of Matthew Austin.

Billy Corps and Cameron Brown remained unbeaten on 14 and 24 respectively before the rain set in. The sides shared six points apiece.

The eagerly anticipated second-string derby between Old Southendian & Southchurch and Southend On Sea & EMT was another victim of the weather, but not before Old Boys’ Blake Sutheran had wooed the small crowd with an impressive century.

Sutheran was eventually caught by James Clarke off his own delivery on 107, helping the home side to 249. 

Wicketkeeper/batter, Stanley Cornwell was also in good nick, scoring 40. Graham Butler wax the pick of SOSEMT’s attack, returning figures of four for 40, while Chris Hunt took 3/52.

SOSEMT had reached 33 for the loss of one wicket when play was haulted. Joe Mohan was unbeaten on 15. Tilak Patel was the man out, caught by Callum Powrie off the bowling of Henry Williams.
