Colchester United v Walsall – Sky Bet League Two – JobServe Community Stadium – Saturday 5:30pm – Preview
The importance of the next few days isn’t lost on Ray Crawford as Colchester United’s EFL membership remains very much in the balance.
The U’s host Fellow strugglers Walsall on Saturday before facing Southend United next Tuesday – Two victories and six points will put pay to any i]lingering fears of relegation, but with just one victory in their last 25 outings, Crawford fears for his former club.
“It’s all very well saying that we need to win – I’m more concerned how a team on such a bad run is going to achieve it?” the former frontman told Yellow Sport.
The new management team would have been encouraged by what they saw from the boys at Bolton and we were close to getting over the line against Barrow. But at Oldham on Friday night, all the old issues resurfaced. Poor defending, a lack of cohesion and very little quality.
“Colchester are in the box seat in this relegation battle. They have a four-point advantage. Ask Grimsby and Southend, they would happily swap places. It is in our hands.
“But if we can’t get anything against Walsall on Saturday, it remains in the balance. Southend’s new manager has had a week with his squad. Do we really want to be going into that game with so much at stake?”
Crawford continued: “One game at a time. Walsall will be buoyed by back to back victories, all but ending their relegation worries. Either they come looking to extend that sequence or are satisfied that the pressure is off – the former, I believe.
“But I’ve always tried to get behind Colchester United and back them. This is their hour of need – I think the boys will come up trumps, end the bad run and get the all-important win which will edge us closer to safety.”
Ray Crawford’s prediction: Colchester United 1-0 Walsall
Jeevesie’s prediction: Colchester United 1-1 Walsall
