Ray calls for Colchester to put down a marker

Colchester United v Sutton United – Sky Bet League Two – JobServe Community Stadium – Saturday 3pm – Preview

Ray Crawford has urged Colchester United to put down a marker when bottom of the table Sutton United visit the JobServe Community Stadium on Saturday.

The U’s have cobbled together a tentative unbeaten run of three Sky Bet League Two matches. However, their former frontman wants the North Essex side to put on a show in front of their own fans against the struggling new boys.

“We need to get the supporters excited about watching the team,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“I’m pleased that we have started to put a run together but we need to be more convincing, more clinical. I think this match provides an opportunity.

“We can’t afford to take our eye off the ball. Sutton United deserved to be promoted last season. They are adjusting to playing in the league and I’m sure they will start picking up shortly.

“But I think we have a little extra quality. We need that to show in abundance come the weekend.”

Crawford continued: “We have only lost one game, but the draws need to be converted into wins. I’ve said before, Frank Nouble and Freddie Sears will score goals at this level, but we need to be a bit more creative in the final third.

“Sutton come here having lost dramatically to Oldham Athletic last week, conceding twice in the last two minutes. That will have hurt them. Confidence will be low, but the determination to put things right would have gone up a notch or two.

“Colchester are at home and have to make the game all about themselves. They should expect to win, I expect them to win. It’s down to this group of players to convince the supporters that they are capable of challenging towards the top and not contempt to bod about in the middle of League Two.

Ray Crawford’s prediction: Colchester United 2-0 Sutton United
Jeevesie’s prediction: Colchester United 3-0 Sutton United
