Mansfield Town v Colchester United – One Call Stadium – Sky Bet League Two – Saturday 3pm

Mansfield Town v Colchester United – Preview:

Ray Crawford was absolutely cock-a-hoop to see Colchester United progress into the last eight of the Carabao Cup and has urged the players to use the current euphoria surrounding the club to springboard them towards promotion come the end of the campaign.

The U’s progressed past Crawley Town during the week, this after laying the foundations with solid Sky Bet League Two performances against high-flying Crewe Alexandra and Newport County: “The boys must ride this wave of cup glory,” he told Yellow Sport.

“The last three displays have proved they can be up amongst the teams at the top. Everyone is talking about the team – they must somehow bottle this feelgood factor and carry it with them through the season.

“The performance at Crawley was terrific. They had to weather an early storm – unsurprisingly, against a team who had recently beaten them and were themselves looking to get back on track following a bad result at the weekend. But once we got the quick equaliser, there was only one team in it.

“There were some terrific individual performances. Frank Nouble, Luke Norris and Cohen Bramall stuck out for me, although the two central defenders once again impressed. The U’s definitely have the ability to challenge.”

Colchester returns to league action with a trip to Mansfield Town on Saturday, a match Crawford recognised as potentially tricky.

“Mansfield’s league position is a little deceiving,” the former U’s frontman added.

“They are in the bottom half but have won three of their last five in the league, including a 6-1 win over Oldham. They have goals in them and are notoriously difficult to play against.

“I think it will take a similar performance to the last three to see Colchester home. A point would be a reasonable return, but as ever, I’m backing the boys to take all three points.”
