Colchester United v Tottenham Hotspur – JobServe Community Stadium – Carabao Cup third round – Tuesday (7:45pm)

Colchester United v Tottenham Hotspur – Preview:

RAY CRAWFORD has urged the Colchester United players to give it absolutely everything they’ve got when they take on Premier League giants, Tottenham Hotspur, in an eagerly anticipated Carabao Cup third-round tie at the JobServe Community Stadium.

The U’s have been in decent Sky bet League Two form of late and will undoubtedly have taken heart from dispatching Crystal Palace via a penalty shoot-out in the previous round of the competition. And although Spurs will provide what some might see as an impossible task for Colchester – Crawford insisted the history would suggest otherwise.

“We will always have Leeds,” Crawford enthused.

“That day back in 1971 proved that anything is possible in the cup. Tottenham are favourites, they should win, they probably will win, but Colchester has an opportunity to test themselves against one of the best teams in Europe.

“I was at the game when Colchester played Spurs three years ago. We got beaten, but for spells, the boys did very well. Its a case of doing the same things again. Of course, they are Premier League footballers, but you can try to match them. That’s what Colchester did at Palace – that is why we have this game.

“The whole town will be excited with the ground sold out. All the pressure is on Tottenham. They have made a stop-start to the season. Perhaps there are one or two doubts in their minds?

“I’m sure in the great scheme of things, Saturday’s game with Macclesfield is more important because Colchester wants to get promoted. But as a player, you don’t want to pass up the opportunity when you face world-class opponents. You want to give them something to remember you by, just like we did with Leeds.”

Crawford added: “Colchester has been very good defensively of late. If they can keep it tight and stay in the game, then anything can happen. I don’t think Spurs will take too many chances in terms of changing their side. It will be a strong line-up. It is up to the Colchester boys to give them something to think about.”
