Ray Crawford: How are U’s supposed to climb the league when the players can’t do the basics?

Colchester United v Exeter City – Sky Bet League Two – JobServe Community Stadium – Tuesday (7:45pm) – Preview

Another damaging defeat – The pressure ramped up a notch further – Back-to-back tough home games to follow…

It doesn’t get any easier for under-performing Colchester United, leaving former frontman, Ray Crawford concerned that this is a relegation battle his former club might not survive.

After slipping to Elliott List’s penalty at fellow strugglers, Stevenage, Colchester now face in-form Exeter City followed by play-off contenders, Newport County. The margin of error, decreasing by the week.

“I can’t work out what system we play, of for that matter, if the players know either?” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“How are we supposed to climb the league when the players can’t do the basics? I’d imagine the manager is under pressure but the players need to step up. A number of them have experienced football at a higher level. It’s time they brought that experience to the table and gave the supporters something to be optimistic about.

“You only have to look at the goals we concede. It is basic stuff – Very frustrating.”

Colchester now face an Exeter side unbeaten in fifteen Sky Bet League Two outings and having won each of their last five: “The odds don’t look good for us,” Crawford confessed.

“Exeter are the sort of club we need to be using as a blueprint. I see them challenging every season and want to know why we can’t be up there with them?

“Only Colchester United can answer that question. As ever, I’ll back the boys to get something from the game, but clearly, something isn’t right and there is a concerning feeling of discontent amongst the fans.”

Ray Crawford’s prediction: Colchester United 1-1 Exeter City
Jeevesie’s prediction: Colchester United 0-3 Exeter City
