Colchester United v Port Vale – Sky Bet League Two – JobServe Community Stadium – Saturday 3pm – Preview
Ray Crawford was pleasantly surprised by Colchester United’s hard-fought draw at Salford City and is now hoping the U’s can all but secure their Sky Bet League Two status when fellow strugglers, Port Vale visit the JobServe Community Stadium on Saturday.
Back-to-back goalless draws with Grimsby and Salford have edged the U’s eight points clear of the dropzone. A win over Vale would carry them past the 40-point mark and within a whisker of safety.
“It’s a massive match for both teams, but I’m only interested in Colchester,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.
“I was surprised that we got something from Salford. I predicted a defeat but I’m very happy to be proved wrong by the boys. I know we had chances to win the game, but I’d have taken a point beforehand.
“Port Vale beat Newport on Tuesday night. They are in a similar position to us. I think both teams will look to win the game and ensure their league future. But we are the home side. I’m expecting us to go for it – get the points and relieve some of the pressure for the remaining matches.
“I don’t think the bottom two have it in them to catch up, but two more wins for Colchester will ensure it’s not us who are caught, should one of them put together a run.
“I’m confident Colchester will stay up, but there are clearly divisions between sections of teh supporters and the owner. Somehow, that needs to be repaired if the club is to turn the corner next season and draw a line under several seasons of decline.”
Ray Crawford’s prediction: Colchester United 1-0 Port Vale
Jeevesie’s prediction: Colchester United 1-1 Port Vale
