Ray Crawford doffed his cap towards Danny Cowley and his Colchester United players after they battled their way to an unlikely share of the Sky Bet League Two spoils at league leaders Mansfield Town.

Harry Anderson fired the North Essex side into an early lead. However,

Mansfield hit back just after the hour when Lewis Brunt netted from close range following a melee in the U’s box.

“The boys were magnificent, particularly Owen Goodman in goal,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“Of course, three points would have been better, but psychologically, that result and performance should give us a lift.

“What with Sutton United winning and Forest Green picking up recently, we needed something. I did predict a draw – perhaps more in hope than expectation. The boys have proved they have a bit of spirit. We now head into a pivotal weekend which could well shape the very future of the club.”

Colchester face Newport County and Tranmere Rovers over the Easter period: “These are massive games, but then again, they all are right now,” the former frontman added.

“We’ve got to be brave. No fear. Together as a team. That is the only way we will pull clear of relegation.

“Newport lost at Barrow last weekend, but they have been on the up of late. Tranmere have pulled clear of the relegation zone and will be a far tougher opponent than they were when they came to Colchester earlier in the season.

“As supporters, we have to be wary. We have seen good performances in the past which haven’t been followed up. The Easter games allow us to pull clear. It is sink or swim time.

“I do not doubt that should we avoid relegation and the Cowley’s ambitions are matched, then better times are not far away for Colchester United. But in the meantime, it is up to this group of players to pull us clear and provide a foundation for a more successful future.”
