Ray Crawford: Missed chances are proving costly

Morecambe v Colchester United – Globe Arena – Sky Bet League Two – Saturday 3pm

Morecambe v Colchester United – Preview:

RAY CRAWFORD was against left frustrated as wasteful Colchester United passed up a series of opportunities against a side struggling at the bottom of Sky bet League Two.

The U’s were held to a goalless draw by rock-bottom Stevenage at the Lamex Stadium, this despite the home side playing seventy minutes with ten men and the U’s having twenty-four shots during the contest.

The result – Colchester’s third-successive draw – saw John McGreal’s men slip out of the play-off places, and with another struggling side, in the shape of Morecambe, up next – Crawford has urged his former side to rediscover their cutting edge.

“We pummeled Stevenage, but once again, we haven’t won – it’s disappointing,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“Sure, Paul Farman, in the Stevenage goal, had a terrific game – as did their defenders. But Colchester still missed so many chances that they should be burying. I’d have loved some of the opportunities the forwards are getting!

“It would be more worrying if we weren’t creating anything. But still, if you are not taking the chances and not winning the games then it has the same effect on your league position.”

Crawford continued: “Sometimes you need a bit of luck, just to turn the tide back in your direction. But ultimately, you have to be ruthless. I said it last week and fully expected Colchester to do exactly that against a team at the bottom of the table – but we weren’t.

“Morecambe will offer Colchester a similar challenge. They are at the wrong end of the league, in fact now bottom because of the point Stevenage got from us. But they won at our place and that will be in the back of their minds, even though they have lost three on the bounce.

“Colchester must get it right in front of goal, and quickly! We are unbeaten in eleven leagues games but need to turn the draws into wins.

“I fully expect someone to get a walloping off us soon – but I’d take any victory, simply to get us back on track.”
