Scunthorpe United v Colchester United – Glanford Park – Sky Bet League Two – Saturday 3pm

Scunthorpe United v Colchester United – Preview:

Ray Crawford has urged the Colchester United players to forget about Manchester United and focus all their energies on Saturday’s tricky Sky Bet League Two trip to in-form Scunthorpe United.

The U’s head to Old Trafford for their Carabao Cup quarter-final next Wednesday. However, with promotion topping the club’s ambitions, three points from Glanford Park would be a godsend ahead of the busy Christmas period.

Nevertheless, Colchester are also in a bit of form just now. John McGreal’s men are five without a loss and sit just a single point and a place outside the top seven.

“It’s got to be all about Scunthorpe,” Crawford insisted.

“Of course, everyone is excited about Manchester United – I understand that. But winning this one could get us amongst the play-off places which ultimately is more important.

Host’s Scunthorpe are unbeaten in six league matches – a run which has carried them safely away from the wrong end of the table and given the Iron belief that they can challenge for a play-off berth over the coming weeks. It has also seen Iron boss, Paul Hurst, nominated for the Sky Bet League Two Manager of the Month for November.

“Scunthorpe have done well and are turning their season around. It will be a difficult game for Colchester. I think the two sides are very similar – well organised and difficult to break down. That could lead to a game where we cancel each other out.

“But that isn’t a bad thing. A draw against another in-form team is a decent return. The emphasis is probably a little more on Scunthorpe as the home team, but they too would probably see a draw as continued progress. It keeps them in touch with the chasing pack.”

Crawford added: “Once it’s done, we can all think about Old Trafford. But even then, it is a one-off occasion. Getting out of this league has to be Colchester’s priority and this season we have a great chance to achieve that.”
