Ray Crawford: There’s no room for error

Crawley Town v Colchester United – Sky Bet League Two – Broadfield Stadium – Saturday (3pm) – Preview

Ray Crawford admitted his frustration after relegation-threatened Colchester United ended up empty-handed against highflying Wrexham and Stockport County, despite producing battling performances worth a better reward.

The U’s remain embroiled in a desperate bid to avoid the drop from Sky Bet League Two and head to Crawley Town at the weekend in the knowledge that they have to find some points from somewhere, and fast!

“As I’ve said before, battling qualities aren’t always enough,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“We can’t fault the effort against Wrexham or Stockport, but ultimately, they are where they are for a reason, and so are we.

“I don’t doubt we will give it everything we have to stay up. And let’s be honest, it is still in our own hands. But we are not making it easy for ourselves. I’m feeling the supporters’ frustrations.”

The U’s head to Crawley on Saturday. A side that was beaten 4-1 at Wrexham on Tuesday evening, but still looks likely to snatch a play-off place.

“It’s going to be another tough one,” Crawford added.

“Crawley thrashed Mansfield recently and have been in reasonable form of late. Again, we are not in a position to pick and choose, we need points from somewhere and need to target this one, like all the rest.

“There is no room for error. I think we need to win at least two matches, possibly three.

“Having played well and lost against Wrexham and Stockport, the confidence must have taken a hit, especially with the goalkeeping error and penalty miss in the last game.

“But the manager and his squad have no option. None of us do. What is ahead of us is a sizable challenge. Either we hit it head-on, or we sink without a trace.”

Ray Crawford’s prediction: Crawley Town 1-1 Colchester United
