Notts County v Colchester United – Sky Bet League Two – Meadow Lane – Saturday (3pm) – Preview

Ray Crawford doffed his cap in the direction of Danny Cowley and his Colchester United players after they saw off a dogged Grimsby Town side to all but secure their Sky Bet League Two status.

Goals from Tom Hopper and John Akinde secured a 2-0 victory, their second successive league triumph, to open up a four-point advantage over Sutton United, currently in the final relegation place.

“We are nearly there,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“I know we still have work to do, but the wins over Crawley and Grimsby have made it ever so difficult for Sutton. We kept our heads and got the points. No let-up now, we need to get the job done this weekend at Notts County.”

The U’s face a Notts side that has endured an erratic first season back in the EFL and who were thrashed by champions Stockport County on Tuesday evening.

“Notts are playing for pride, which makes them something of a dangerous animal,” Crawford added.

“But we still have something at stake. I don’t expect Danny and Nicky to let the standards drop now. They will want this finished as soon as possible so they can start planning for next season.

“I think Colchester supporters can look forward to better times while the Cowley’s are at the club. They will target promotion, whether that be automatic or via the play-offs.

“Of course, for that eventuality to happen, there will be plenty of comings and goings on the playing side. That adds up to an exciting summer where the management starts shaping a squad they believe is capable of achieving their ambitions.

“But let’s not run before we can walk. Three points a Notts will turn the page and end this particular chapter. I’m pretty sure we will all be pleased to see teh back of it.”

Ray Crawford’s prediction: Notts County 0-1 Colchester United
