Salford City v Colchester United – Peninsula Stadium – Sky Bet League Two – Saturday 3pm

Salford City v Colchester United – Preview:

COLCHESTER UNITED continued to slip away from the Sky Bet League Two promotion places, drawing a rally-call from concerned former frontman, Ray Crawford.

The U’s 3-0 defeat at Port Vale was their third in four matches – a sequence which has seen them drop nine points adrift of the automatic promotion places. Indeed, John McGreal’s men only retained a play-off place on goal difference as their floundering form continued to agitate the U’s supporters.

“I’m not really sure what has happened? A problem in the dressing room? Losing their nerve? Whatever it is, the big characters in the dressing room now need to stand up and be counted,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“There are plenty of questions to be answered. Colchester usually come down with the Christmas decorations. This season, I thought we had overcome that, but once again the mental side of it has come to light and only those wearing the shirts can change that.

“I’ve seen the goals we conceded at Port Vale. I can’t believe that a team which had been so watertight is now defending so poorly. Surely, Colchester won’t allow a season which previously offered so much, to peter out insignificantly?”

Colchester head to Salford City on Saturday and Crawford insisted that only a win is good enough for the North Essex side: “There is no longer any room for error. We have to go there and win.

“That isn’t going to be easy. Salford have settled into life in the Football League quite well, and themselves could still make the play-off’s with a consistent run.

“I’ve heard some incredible comments from fans, suggesting Colchester don’t want promotion. I’m sure that isn’t the case, but this group of players – who for so long looked destined to challenge – have to responded big time.

“It’s a time for leaders. Let’s see who has the stomach for a battle.”
