Ray Crawford: U’s can’t afford to priorities games

Salford City v Colchester United – Sky Bet League Two – Peninsula Stadium – Tuesday 7pm – Preview

A point at bottom of the table Grimsby was more than Ray Crawford expected from out of sorts Colchester United, but the former frontman can’t see the U’s following that up with a positive outcome at play-off hopefuls, Salford City on Tuesday evening.

Saturday’s goalless encounter at Blundell Park left Colchester seven points clear of the dropzone and Crawford believes another two victories could be sufficient to see them avoid the drop.

“If we can get to 43 points, I don’t see the bottom two gatting close to that,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“The trouble is, I don’t see us winning at Salford, making Saturday’s game with Port Vale a huge six-pointer.

“Salford will be confident after winning the Football League Trophy at Wembley. With that behind them, they can concentrate on the league. I’m not sure Colchester have the quality they do at the moment – I just don’t see us getting anything there.”

Crawford continued: “Because of the unpredictability of the league, Colchester can’t priorities matches. We need to get between 43 and 46 points as quickly as possible. It would be dangerous to look ahead to games with Port Vale, Southend, Barrow and Walsall – just targeting them. Barrow looks the pick of the bunch at the moment, while I’m not sure we are currently as strong defensively as Southend. The margin for error is very slim. We need to target every game.

“To be honest, I think Colchester will stay up this season. My concern is that the club has taken a step or two backwards over the past few seasons. I want to see us flourishing again, getting to a higher division and giving the people a football team to be proud of.”

Ray Crawford’s prediction: Salford City 2-0 Colchester United
