Ray Crawford: U’s must make home a fortress

Colchester United v Northampton Town – Sky Bet League Two – JobServe Community Stadium – Saturday 3pm – Preview

A goalless Sky Bet League draw at Carlisle followed by a narrow Carabao Cup defeat at Birmingham City perhaps hasn’t painted the full picture for those looking in upon Colchester United.

The U’s have performed well during both of their opening fixtures, giving both Hayden Mullins and the supporters plenty to be optimistic about.

But in a business where the manager and his charges will be judged on results, former Colchester frontman, Ray Crawford has fired a warning shot ahead of Saturday’s encounter with fellow promotion hopefuls, Northampton Town at the JobServe Community Stadium.

“We need to get a win under our belts,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“The performances have been very good but we can’t settle into a pattern where the display is more important than the result. A win at any cost will do wonders for morale, particularly as the team knows they have it in them. And with our fans back, it is vitally important that we make it difficult for visiting teams – make the JobServe a fortress.”

Visitors’ Northampton Town began their campaign with a single-goal success over Port Vale following a tight encounter at Sixfields: “They already have a win, lifting a bit of pressure,” Crawford added.

“I think Northampton will be amongst the frontrunners, so if we can get one over on them then that will send out a message that Colchester means business.

“I think we have goals in the team. Frank Nouble and Freddie Sears can deliver, while I’m hearing rave reports about Sylvester Jasper, who I believe can supply the ammunition. Everything is in place – we just need the boys to perform and get on a winning run.”

Crawford added: “I still think we might need one or two more additions to the squad, keeping the group competitive and giving Hayden the depth required for a promotion push. I’m sure he is looking at strengthening, although it must be said that the recruitment so far has been very impressive.

“I want to see Colchester United playing on the front foot, entertaining the crowd and winning football matches. If we can see off Northampton and put down a marker, the foundations are in place and the standards set for where we want to be.”

Ray Crawford’s prediction: Colchester United 2-0 Northampton Town
