Ray Crawford: U’s need to be more adventurous

Oldham Athletic v Colchester United – Sky Bet League Two – Boundary Park – Saturday (3pm) – Preview

A late penalty – a first goal of the season – a point they scarcely deserved. It was a questionable performance from Colchester United against Mansfield Town during the week, but having proverbially ‘got away with one’ Ray Crawford would now like to see the U’s playing on the front foot.

Speaking to Yellow Sport ahead of the U’s trip to Oldham Athletic on Saturday, the former frontman said: “We don’t seem to be creating too much, which concerns me.

“I’m not questioning the work rate, but we need to find that killer pass. We have looked very predictable in the early games. The front boys seem to be isolated. Unless we can change things, goals will be hard to come by.

“Shamal George was our best player by a mile. If it wasn’t for him, Mansfield would have scored three or four. We need to be a little more attack-minded and not sit so deep, inviting teams on to us.”

Crawford continued: “I’m aware that this is more difficult to achieve away from home, but at the moment we run the risk of getting swamped.

“We now face an Oldham side at the bottom of the table, without a point. I think the last-minute goal on Tuesday should have lifted us. Oldham will be desperate having lost all three of their matches so far. Their results have been close, but we need to be going up there to dictate the game and ultimately win.

“I think Freddie Sears and Frank Nouble will score goals. But the service needs to improve massively and quickly or else this is going to turn into another difficult season very quickly.”

Ray Crawford’s prediction: Oldham Athletic 0-1 Colchester United
Jeevesie’s prediction: Oldham Athletic 1-1 Colchester United
