Ray Crawford: U’s will want to put the record straight at Crawley

Crawley Town v Colchester United – The People’s Pension Stadium – Carabao Cup fourth round – Tuesday 7:45pm

Crawley Town v Colchester United – Preview:

Ray Crawford believes Colchester United’s desire to put the record straight will inspire then to a Carabao Cup victory at Crawley Town on Tuesday evening.

The U’s were beaten at the People’s Pension Stadium when the pair met in Sky Bet League Two – a game the north Essex side thought they should have won – and Crawford thinks that alone will serve as an incentive when the pair go head-to-head with a quarter-final place tantalisingly dangled as an attractive carrot for the victors.

“I know the winners will be looking at getting a big club in the next round, but for Colchester, they will want to get that recent loss at Crawley out of their system,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“They seem to have recovered from a recent wobble. A draw at Crewe, then beating Newport – both sides chasing promotion – suggests Colchester are back on track. Crawley will be smarting after a thumping off Swindon at the weekend. I think their confidence will be damaged.

Crawford continued: “This game will be different from the league fixture. It’s a one-off, it’s got to be finished on the night. Crawley is the home side and will be expected to come at Colchester. However, I think that will play into our hands. We can defend and pick them off – I don’t see us making any mistakes this time.

“Of course, Crawley will believe they can get back on track. They haven’t won since beating the U’s that day. This is a great opportunity for them as well. But I think Colchester’s return to form has come at the right time. I hope they can’t do it, then get one of the big boys in the next round.”
