Colchester United v Crewe Alexandra – Sky Bet League Two – JobServe Community Stadium – Saturday (3pm) – Preview

And so it all comes down to the final game of the season…

Colchester United needs a single point to avoid losing their Sky Bet League Two status. Play-off contenders, Crewe Alexandra provide the opposition at what is sure to be a nervy JobServe Community Stadium.

Former U’s frontman, Ray Crawford understands the fan’s concerns, but believes that come Saturday evening, Colchester United will still be an EFL club.

“We’ve got to believe,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“We are the team in the box seat. Even if we lose, Sutton United have got to win big at MK Dons. I don’t see that happening.

“Of course, losing the Doncaster Rovers game heavily has left the door open, which is frustrating and worrying. But Crewe, who incidentally only need a point themselves to ensure a top-six place, have wobbled of late. I think both sides will be ultra-cautious.

Crawford continued: “I think we will be okay, but the big thing is ensuring we are not in this position this time next year. I seem to remember saying that before. It has almost caught up with us this time, and still might if everything goes horribly wrong.

“Danny and Nicky Cowley will no doubt have ideas on how to shape the future of Colchester United Football Club. We need to match their ambitions going forward. I’d imagine we will see a much-changed squad come the start of next season.

“But for now, all we can do is focus on Saturday. It’s going to be a tough watch. We need to do what we’ve got to do. Ensure we stay up, then put this sorry episode behind us.

“I’ll have everything crossed, just like every other Colchester supporter. I just hope my old club can pull through and give the supporters better times than what they have become used to.”

Good luck, U’s.
