Colchester United v Newport County – JobServe Community Stadium – Sky Bet League Two – Saturday 3pm
Colchester United v Newport County – Preview:
Ray Crawford was pleased to see Colchester United get back on track with a notable Sky Bet League Two goalless draw at top of the table Crewe Alexandra but has been baffled by the U’s form of late.
Carabao Cup exploits coupled with a decent run in the leag had carried the U’s to the cusp of the play-off places. However, damaging defeats at Crawley and then to struggling Morecambe rather left John McGreal’s men treading water in mid-table and left the U’s fans scratching their heads as their old adversary, inconsistency, hurled a spanner into the proverbial works.
“Will the real Colchester United please stand up?” Crawford inquisitively asked Yellow Sport.
“It was a great result at Crewe – and should have been a win had we not missed that late penalty. But the two games before, particularly Morecambe, don’t make any sense? I guess only Colchester can contain Tottenham and lose to Morecambe within a few weeks!
“Hopefully, the two defeats were just a blip and we are back on track now. Colchester can’t afford to lose any more ground on the leading pack. Defensively, a clean sheet at Crewe was terrific – we need to start finding the net though, taking the pressure off those boys at the back.”
Looking ahead to Saturday’s match with in-form Newport County, Crawford said: “They are a good side – only one defeat in the leag all season, but we have the quality to get a positive result.
“Newport has shown the sort of consistency that Colchester requires for a promotion push. I understand their manager, Michael Flynn, wants them to be a little more ruthless – but as we have seen over recent seasons, they have competed well with some big clubs in the cups, similarly to Colchester this year.
“The game will provide Colchester with a yardstick. They can win the game. Newport’s own progress is a measure of what can be achieved with the right attitude and mindset.”
