Ray urges U’s to discover their shooting boots

Colchester United v Salford City – Sky Bet League Two – JobServe Community Stadium – Saturday (3pm) – Preview

A point on the road and a clean sheet pleased Ray Crawford. However, the former Colchester United frontman was once again left slightly frustrated by the lack of a cutting edge from the North Essex side during their goalless encounter with Swindon Town at the County Ground.

“All things said, it’s a good point against a team I’d expect to be close to the play-off places,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“Our goals against column stands up well against anyone towards the top of the table. But we are not as effective at the other end. We’ve not scored in four of our eight league games – something in that department has to change.

“Throw the cup matches against Birmingham and Gillingham into the mix – we are setting a worrying trend. The league table is starting to take shape. I still think we have a capable group of players, but obviously, we will quickly find ourselves in trouble again if this doesn’t change soon.

“I’m not sure why Noah Chilvers and Armando Dobra were introduced so late in the game. Both should be starting, for me. Their excursion from the start of matches seems to put us on the back foot from the first whistle which is frustrating.”

Colchester entertains Salford City on Saturday. Another side that, perhaps surprisingly, has made an indifferent start to the season.

“It’s another opportunity to put things right in front of our own fans,” Crawford added.

“I fear that we are not capable of changing the pattern of play and are a little stuck in our ways at the moment.

“We don’t appear to possess creativity at the front end of home matches. It’s almost like we wait for the opposition to make the first move but quickly run out of answers.

“No doubt, the manager will be aware of this. Colchester must start impressing their supporters. Salford are under pressure too. I don’t think it will be pretty, but I fancy us to edge it by one goal.”

Ray Crawford’s prediction: Colchester United 1-0 Salford City
