Colchester United v Newport County – Sky Bet League Two – JobServe Community Stadium – Saturday 3pm – Preview
Ray Crawford joined every other Colchester United supporter in blowing out his cheeks in relief after the U’s earned interim boss, Wayne Brown his first Sky Bet League Two victory to end a winless run of fourteen matches.
Callum Harriott’s double was enough to see off Carlisle United at the JobServe and move the North Essex side ten points clear of the dropzone with all the sides below them slipping to defeat.
“There’s still lots to do, we are not safe, but at least there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.
“The feeling is more of relief than excitement. As much as the win eases our relegation worries, it also only papers over the cracks. Colchester United shouldn’t be in this position. They are. Why?
“The players dug deep, they found something I thought they’d lost – their pride. But now they must be professional and ensure our safety. We have a reasonable cushion again, but that can quickly be whittled away if one or two below us get on a run.”
On match-winner, Callum Harriott, Crawford added: “I’m pleased for Callum. He’s an experienced player in the group. He took responsibility for the penalty, then scored a belter to win it. That will give him, and everyone, confidence going into the last third of the season.”
Crawford looked ahead to the visit of Newport County: “They’ve been a little inconsistent of late, but will be targeting Colchester for three points.
“I’m sure the Carlisle result has given us added belief. This will still be a difficult match and every point is now vital. I just hope this smashing little club has turned the corner, can pull away from the wrong end of the league and can look forward to brighter times in the future.”
Ray Crawford’s prediction: Colchester United 0-0 Newport County
Jeevesie’s prediction: Colchester United 0-1 Newport County
