The Redbridge Council leader joined the borough’s refuse collectors for a shift in a show of support.
Cllr Jas Athwal joined a morning shift last Thursday (April 23) to show appreciation for their work ensuring rubbish is still collected during the coronavirus pandemic.
Rubbish is currently being collected from 5am onwards, with litter and recycling in the same sack.
Bulky waste and garden waste collections are suspended.
Councillor Jas Athwal said: “It was a pleasure to join our fantastic refuse crews on a collection round and lend a hand.
“These guys have really stepped up and are keeping one of our most vital services running during this incredibly difficult time.
“Collecting household rubbish is really hard work and I was so impressed by the crew I joined.
“Ray, Bradley and Costica get up at the crack of dawn every day and haul heavy bags non-stop for five hours per shift. They deserve our utmost respect and appreciation.
“Local people have been putting out pictures and supportive messages for our refuse collectors and I know these are really appreciated.
“I wanted to help out in my own way which is why I joined the crew and I’m so glad I did.”
Previously the council has had to ask residents to treat refuse collectors with more respect, after two were verbally abused and one was spat at during work.
